The origin of the Scripture Cake, also known as the Bible Cake and the Old Testament Cake, is not known but it is generally understood that it was developed as a teaching aid to young people learning the Bible verses.

The ingredients, all of which are mentioned in the Bible, were not made known to the children so that they had to read through the Scriptures to resolve the mystery. The cake became very popular in Victorian times when various recipes were published. This Scripture Cake closely follows one of the original, genuine recipes of that era.
